Cheatsheet

Sorry Mark Twain, German Grammar is logical.

Mahatma Gandhi

There is no doubt that Mark Twain is one of the greatest writers of all time. Last week, he apologized to me personally for his rant titled The Awful German Language. True story! After spontaneously dropping by at the GRAMMAR BOOTCAMP, he apologized profusely afterwards and even signed my copy of “The Diaries of Adam and Eve.” Here you can see the cheatsheet he used to practice his proper German skills. Where else would the marvelous translation of the German version of his books have come from?

The logic behind Grammar

According to neurolinguistic understanding, when listening to a language in the human brain, the grammatical order or syntax is called up first and only then the semantics. What role does this play and why should you be interested?

For many learners, whose daily work is determined by logical processes, it seems to make sense to first understand where something new belongs in order to then attend to its meaning. The order as the first work step forces the translation of the words in an ever faster sequence in the correct order during the second work step.

Just as in logistics the incoming parcels, letters or goods must first be sorted, this process can be automated one after the other. In other words, the same principle is used for incoming language in the human brain. If there were no sophisticated logistics, no language in the world would maintain.

What happens when there is no plan to understand and speak more words more quickly can be seen in the cliché of learning a foreign language, which may not seem unfamiliar. In the beginning, there is an increase in performance until at a certain point, the motivation decreases. In fact, more and more levels of performance are added, which can strain the working memory with new input to the point that motivation is affected by the stress that arises.

If you are interested, you will be able to understand what exactly an accusative, dative, nominative or genitive is and not just that it exists and that you have to be careful not to do anything wrong. Oh yes, we call these things green, blue, yellow and purple and you just have to be careful not to forget what your favourite food is called in German.

You will basically learn to manage stress at a glance. You get a kind of memory expansion for your brain. It’s free, uses no electricity, works contactless and is always available whenever you want or need it.

The funny thing is, the more you will use this memory expansion, the less you will need to use it.

Content of the course:

  • Question words
  • Articles

  • Prepositions

  • Verb types (strong, weak)
  • Declination
  • and much more….

Teaching the grammar overview aka cheatsheet as a tool meets the pre-requisites for learning the German language. THE GRAMMAR BOOTCAMP is suitable for both beginners and advanced learners. It is not necessary to divide the course into levels, as the course tends to impart knowledge and provide exercises in dogma style. All you need is a pen and paper.

The medium-term goal is for learners to be able to write down their own grammar overview from logical connections by heart.

Finally it’s about gaining self-confidence.
